I love small-talk. It’s delightful and interesting… until someone asks the question, “So, where do your kids go to school?” At that moment, I am instantly a little red-faced and almost embarrassed to give an answer. Why?
When the answer to that question is the name of a private school, it feels like there’s an instant tension in the air.
{It’s probably because they have an image in their heads of something ridiculous like the above photo.)
Then I’m compelled to apologize for our choosing a private school over a public one and begin to praise our public schools for their achievements.
Why do I feel like I have to do that?
I have every right to choose what school I send my children to.
So, here it is, and if your children go to any school other than public, you may encounter this same situation.
There’s a stigma with a family who chooses to send their children to private school. Everyone thinks they’re too good for public school. They’ve got lots of money to throw into private schools. They sadly had to sell their private plane to fund the tuition (I’m joking here, but you get where I’m going with this.)
However, it’s just not true. We’re not rich. We can barely pay their tuition… it’s going to eat us alive, actually. We just chose a private school for many reasons I’ll have to delve into in another post.
Do you ever feel like you have to apologize for , or belittle, the life you live?
Here’s your chance to let it out! Go ahead; it’s your life to live however you wish!
